I'm going to have two paintings in a gallery show called "Femme Fatale". This is a color study I did for the solo painting I'm submitting. The painting itself will be in watercolor and guoache, whereas this unfinished color study was done in Adobe Photoshop.

I'm working on the final painting and it's really exiting, but I still haven't decided what color the sirens should be. Does anyone think some kind of purple would look better?

This is the first thing I colored when I bought my wacom. I'm still getting used to the tablet, but coloring is becoming a lot of fun.

Gallery piece - Sirens

The idea behind this work is the stories surrounding the sirens of myth. These bird-women would seduce sailors with an intoxicating song, then murder the people drawn to them by the song.

This is a test run for the underpainting. I'm trying to establish the lights and darks, and I hope to achieve a good balance of light and dark. I am going to paint this and submit it to a gallery show themed "Femme-Fatale".

Southern Comfort -- A sketch for the ladies

JAWCooper created this awesome B&W promo piece, which shows clips of some of my non-color work. It really touched me that she went out of her way again to encourage me to take myself seriously as a professional. I was really impressed by how six of my drawings looked side by side. JAW picked great pieces, many of which are favorites of mine. I like the two on the bottom right especially. Thanx JAW!!

digital painting - Dragoon

As far as I know, dragoons are a fighting class that originated in the final fantasy series of games. Dragoons use spears, are typically fast, and have the command "jump", which allows them to leap high into the air and avoid damage.

I'm going to clean the drawing up in photoshop and color it like the last digital painting.

I like how the mountains turned out. I don't really like the indigo blue colored miasma behind the character, however it is good for contrast.

Digital Painting Process

Here are the first three steps I've done for another simple digital painting:

1. Rough sketch - simple, but it captured what I generally needed.

2. Final drawing - drawn from the simpler rough sketch using the light table I recently got second hand from another artist, JAWCooper.

3. Underpainting - Done digitally. The line art was on a layer set to multiply, with the color layers underneath(I always do it this way). Rather than having each color layer correspond to an apect of the drawing (a layer for hair, a layer for a shirt, etc...), I had the layers each correspond to one color. I painted sloppily with a round fuzzy brush, than erased the color I didn't want.

This skinny, flaxen-haired teen reminds me slightly of a boy I knew a long time ago... Oh ve...

Anyhow, I'm practicing painting faces/hair digitally. This isn't a tutorial, rather, I'm looking for input on my technique. I've come a long way in understanding and orienting myself in PS, and I even took an adult ed. course. It was aimed at Digital photography, but I still learned a lot. I'm pretty happy with my progress, but I know there is a lot I still don't know.

Digital Painting: Sketch and First Step

I'm learning to digitally paint. I don't have a tablet, and I am instead using a mouse. It feels very clumsy to color like this. To be perfectly honest, I actually don't like to paint all that much, digitally or otherwise, but I feel the need to learn. Comments appreciated.

Specifically, can anyone recommend a good tutorial on painting hair in photoshop?

Waka and the Dragon

This is fan art for the PS2 game Okami, by Clover Studio. In this picture the exotic, blonde Buddhist exorcist Waka is holding the Serpent Crystal - a relic capable of breaking the impregnable seal placed on the mysterious Moon Cave within which the dragon Orochi dwells. Orochi grasps Waka and snarls at him. Colored primarily in Copic markers, with some white and light yellow gaouche used for highlights. Comments and questions appreciated.

I took an adult education figure drawing class, so there are more drawings like this one to come. The class was a lot of fun -- real laid back atmosphere and the models were friendly and accommodating.

While at a job interview I was asked to sketch the concept "information" on a white board. Later that evening, I drew a much more polished version of the sketch in my sketchbook. Someone pointed out the title of the book was on the back cover instead of the front. I hadn't noticed. Haha, just goes to show how valuable a second opinion can be. Sometimes I make mistakes that are sooo obvious I can't believe I didn't notice them.

I drew this years ago. I've been coloring it little by little over that time. I started with a streak-y background in various beige, yellow and grey prismacolor markers. I did most of the shading in col-erase and graphite pencils. This picture doesn't quite look finished... ... How long am I gonna be coloring this thing?! Oi. Comments appreciated.

Musical Yami and his Demon Band

Drew this last night. It's a character design for someone I named Yami. He has demon musicians to accompany his mandolin playing. This was drawn using pencil and the color is done in copic marker. I like the half colored look myself -- I think coloring the whole thing would have garish results. The marker colors I used were Chrome orange, peony, and light grape. Comments always welcome.

Well, an anthropomorphic deer in a speedo can be either whimsical or weird, depending on how you want to look at it. I think it's a cool, strange little drawing. I drew it using Prismacolor Col-Erase pencils. Then I messed around with it in Photoshop. I'm still a newbie at the Adobe software. Comments welcome.

Thumbnail, Drawing and Underpainting

This is the thumbnail, the full drawing and the finished underpainting. The final step is to paint the color on with gouache. Actually, I've already started painting it. It's exciting because I've never used an underpainting before, and according to most painters the underpainting is an important step. For the underpainting I layered washes of india ink. I'm a little worried about the amount of denim clothing I'm gonna have to paint -- they can't all be the same color and shade. That would look lame.

The final, full-color painting will be featured in a Blind Melon fan book. Comments appreciated.

I drew this as a birthday present for a close friend. I gave it to her about a month late... It's a chick riding a wildebeest, which is the kinda thing my friend really digs. My inspiration was my recent trip to Kenya, where I saw both wildebeests and a whole lot of whatever type of bird I drew here.

This is a photograph of a 12x13 finished sketch for a painting I plan to donate to a Blind Melon book project. I drew caricatures of all five band members. I tried to be flattering or at least to make them look young and well groomed. That job wasn't hard -- quite frankly, they were a good looking bunch. Least they are if you can dig a guy with long hair. They were fun to draw, especially the far left figure which was the first one I drew.

Unfinished Sketch - having trouble

I need input on the above drawing. I traced him from my sketchbook, where he was part of a larger drawing with multiple figures. Here the figure is isolated on a sheet of tracing paper and partially penned. The lower half of the body is a problem for me -- I've blocked it out to get the forms, but I am not satisfied. In the end the figure will be wearing tight corderoy pants, a T-Shirt and some sort of loafer for shoes. He holds in his right hand a microphone that I've only loosely sketched in.

How can I improve this? I'm not confident in my use of anatomy. I particularly mean the yet un-penned part, but constructive input for any aspect of the drawing is appreciated.

P.S. The figure is supposed to be Blind Melon's singer Shannon Hoon, of whom I've previously posted a sketch. Unlike the last sketch which was from a photo, this was drawn from imagination. The drawing is intended to take after the music video for the song No Rain, and I want the finished piece to have the iconic Blind Melon butterfly girl and ideally the other band members.

This is a page from a recent sketchbook. All the line work is done in col-erase pencils. Pictured on the top left and right are drawings of the first cosmonaut. When I look at this drawing, I can't help but hear in my head "... this is ground control to Major Tom, you've really made the grade...". Lyrics from one of the two Bowie songs on my playlist. I never want to travel into space -- that kinda thing scares me more than man-eating sharks.

This is a drawing that has undergone as much GIMP work as I could tolerate. It was a two page spread in a sketchbook I fondly referred to as the big'un. I stopped using that sketchbook because it was way to big for my puny-ass scanner. I had to tile this together from four separate quadrants. I then selected the line-art, converted it to a path, then had the path traced with a calligraphic Gimp brush. I like how it turned out -- I'll post the line drawing for comparison.

I drew these from photos I found on google image search. Dogs seem so expressive to me, I tried to capture each dogs expression and exaggerate it. It's hard to believe that domesticated dogs collectively are a single species. There is so much variety among them.

Blind Melon - Shannon Hoon

This is a drawing of Shannon Hoon who was the frontman for the band Blind Melon. When I'm not feeling particularly creative, I sometimes draw from photos or video files. I don't worry to much about being exact since photos aren't perfect themselves. I try to fix awkward elements in the photo. I usually focus on photos of young men which limits what I learn. I'm really just exploiting a loophole in my ADD. I think it is something to the extent of - nothing can hold my attention unless, of course, it's sexy.

I heard somewhere that donkeys don't like dogs and can actually be trained to guard livestock by chasing off coyotes. I don't know whether this is true, but the comment illicited from me a dramatic and strangely humorous mental image of strife between dog and donkey. This piece is loosely inspired by that mental image. In this case, one finds a half-man half-donkey creature being accosted by domestic dogs (although they arguably don't look like domestic dogs, maybe I should have picked a particular breed and gotten a picture, but hindsight's 20/20.)

I really like how this turned out. Imperfections aside, I think it captured the feel I was going for. I didn't exactly want a violent image. I wanted to capture the tension of a situation that has not yet erupted in actual violence. In this case, both parties are about evenly matched and stand a good chance of serious injury. There's barking, growling, anxious rearing but either side has yet to make a deffinitive move. I naively thought all of this was self-evident from the image, and that the forty minute critique would require little explaination on my part. In actuality my genuinely supportive classmates were confused about exactly what was happening in the picture, but where nonetheless enthusiastic. My crits often go like this.

I drew this while on Safari in Kenya. I drew very little, primarily because it's hard to draw in a moving vehicle, especially if that vehicle is a VW van traveling on dirt roads, which was most of my Africa trip. We stopped at the lions for quite a while and I had time to draw them.

So, I was taking a night off, smoking, and watching South Park. I think this is one of the better doodles I made that night. I taped the fortune I got form the chinese food I had for dinner that night.

The two characters on the top art supposed to be on a motorcycle. They wern't supposed to look like they were embracing... I like the drawing regardless.

I don't know what to say about the little "disney" cartoon-women-thing in the bottom right corner.

Persona 3 - Jin Shirato and Moros

I've been playing around with digital coloring lately. The yellow line drawing is the scan from my sketchbook.

Here we have my favorite video game character of all time: Jin Shirato, a minor antagonist from the PS2 game Persona 3.

What can't be said about Jin? Computer hacker, glasses, amoralist belief system...

Jin is personafied by the god Moros, who is pictured here as the robot holding Jin. in Greek(?) mythology Moros was a son of Nyx and brother to Hypnos, Thanatos and Kerr. Moros embodies the concept of doom, or inevitable fate.

I dunno what to put up.

The image on the left is a sample comic book page. I feel it is representative of my (current) art style. The other image is the same character, but facing another direction.

I'll be posting the comic as I complete it.

I've wanted to draw comics since I was a little kid, but I always assumed I'd be bad at that job. This belief has nothing to do with drawing skill. It's more that I am unable to think linearly. I also can't imagine how I would produce work REGULARLY throughout the year. I guess I'm being a negative Nancy. But I've been racking my brain for ways to circumvent these two problems. Hopefully I'll find a clever solution.

I painted the below pic, then made a polymer plate from the image. The top image is one of the prints from the polymer plate on some textured white-ish paper. I then colored the print with marker.

I drew and colored this with col-erase pencils and marker. This is a woman whose "shawl" is no an animal pelt, but a giant, hairy monster-bug. I did this for a monster drawing class. Actually, this is just the sketch of the final project, which was in the form of a before-after type thing. I'll put up the final version in a bit.

This is the corner of a piece I did. The piece was medium sized and done in copic and prismacolor markers, prismacolor colored pencils. The outline is done in brown pen and I'm suprised at how much I like that.

I think I've overlooked an important piece of info. I have posted only a fraction of the piece. This was all I could fit on my rinky-dink scanner. I keep hoping some thought will come over me, like "Kinko's might have scanners!" this has not happened. I'm sure I'll think of something.

Unfortunately the bottom and left contain pivotal information.
