Lady Lion

A revision on an old drawing of the Sphinx.  The lion body has been given more substance and realistic features.  I kept her face cat-like, but still very human.  As of yet, I am still considering the wings that extend from her arms.

California Camping Sketches

15 min. Ball-Point pen sketches

What a great camping trip in the Los Padres Forest.  I spent most of my time reading and relaxing (and maybe a few minutes oogling a super-cute camp ranger).  Flocks of turkey, meandering deer and gnarled oaks -- my type of thing!

Ephedra - Avestan Painting Sketch

A sketch of the personified ephedra plant - the plant commonly believed to be the mystic plant Haoma of Zoroastrian ritual.  THe sketch on the left is fun and related, but I'm not gonna use it for anything.

Cyber Punk

I drew and penned this character design in my sketchbook and then completely forgot about it until I was thumbing through my old work today.

Mum

This sketch, "Mum", I drew recently while brainstorming for ideas for my Laluzapalooza submissions.  I colored this sketch in marker and photoshop.  If I use this one for a submission, I'd change a few things, such as making the chrysanthemum bigger and more colorful.  Crits and comments welcome.

Excursion to LA Natural History Museum

I briefly visited the Los Angeles Natural History Museum while down south this weekend.  It was a cool experience, because it was the night the museum was hosting a concert.  I didn't get much drawing done, but I was happy to listen to some cool music.

I really liked the material at the museum so I hope to go back to draw more soon.

I don't generally think about insects, but when I do, I think about Robo-insects.  Well, that sounds absurd -- What about super-sonic-robo-WASP aerial vehicle...  Yeah, that sounds cooler.

California Condor, Swainson's Hawk

Magnificent Frigatebird

Acorn Woodpecker, Flicker

Dec. 23 -- I completed some additional studies of native California birds in the SB Natural History Museum's wonderful bird exhibit, which I recommend to anyone interested in life drawing or birds in general.  I was accompanied by the lovely and talented Jaw Cooper.

Digital sketches

Some quick  3/4 view portrait sketches given tonal value in Adobe Photoshop.  I want to put some thought provoking comment about what I learned, but it seems to me that, once again, my problem lies in tonal values, not my understanding of the structure of the face.  Back to the drawing tablet.

Random Ball-Point Pen Sketches

Studies

Babylon Sphinx
Uhh... Fighter Maid?
I filled a whole pad of newsprint paper with ball-point pen sketches.  I did this for drawing practice, but a few sketches were memorable enough to keep.  Heres a couple of my favorites.

Sketch Dump

Dressed to Impress

Click-Click-Tweet

Born to Levitate
Here are some sketches for various projects.  They all have a strange, stylistic element that I think is a definite plus.  The first two are steam-punk themed -- I really like the robo bird.
