Thumbnail, Drawing and Underpainting

This is the thumbnail, the full drawing and the finished underpainting. The final step is to paint the color on with gouache. Actually, I've already started painting it. It's exciting because I've never used an underpainting before, and according to most painters the underpainting is an important step. For the underpainting I layered washes of india ink. I'm a little worried about the amount of denim clothing I'm gonna have to paint -- they can't all be the same color and shade. That would look lame.

The final, full-color painting will be featured in a Blind Melon fan book. Comments appreciated.

  1. I am in awe.  The underpainting looks great!  Even the original thumbnail sketch is adorable!  Are you going post the finished product when it's all done?

  2. Thanks for the support :) I'm glad someone noticed the thumbnail, too, because it is the foundation for the final painting. Without drawing thumbnails, I not sure I could have arranged five figures to look even remotely natural.

Jjjennn, your question about posting the final piece is a very good question. I've been giving that thought for a while now, and I'm not sure if I should post the final for free on the net. Doing that would seem counter-productive to the book, so I hesitate. However, I believe in distributing my art freely and were it not for that attitude I would not be involved in a charity to begin with. I have thought of different options and I am leaning toward this: posting a "preview" of sorts, which would include high quality images of details or aspects of the painting, but not the painting as a whole. The post would direct people to the book where the painting would be in full. That's my best idea so far.

Since you are also involved in the project, I would value any advice you might have on this issue of if/how I should post the final.

  3. Yeah, I don't know.  It's a tough call because it will probably be awhile still before the book comes out;  plus depending on the dimensions of the book, we may not get to see it to its fullest.  I guess one of things that will make the book cool is all the artwork/poetry together in one place – a like-inspired collection rather than individual pieces.  You make a good point that it is for charity though.

Like I said, mine is nowhere near the quality yours is, but I just have the file uploaded to my hosting site and have only sent a link to the image to a few people (like my sister & Brad who is doing the book).  I haven't posted it anywhere.

Your idea is a good one, either that or a watermarked image, but I like your idea better;  entice people to purchase.  I'm definitely eager to see it!
